Gérard Grisey published an article in the journal Melos in 1988 in which he wrote: "We are musicians and our model is sound, not literature or mathematics; sound, not theatre or the visual arts; sound, not quantum theory, nor geology, nor astrology or acupuncture." This statement, which at first sight may seem radical—since it excludes any “extra-musical” idea or compositional approach not linked to the physical characteristics of sound—has been one of the starting points for the development of this composition, which seeks to explore a sonic gesture in its different dimensions. Following this thread of quotations, the other major representative par excellence of the spectral school, Tristan Murail, wrote in his article Questions de cible (Entretemps, 1989): “The artist […] does not aim to describe the object, but to convey the feeling, the sensation that this object creates within him.” Thus, the sonic gesture (or object) that generates this piece is, for me, image, intensity, movement, space and time—but above all, timbre. A living, dynamic sonic gesture that becomes a kind of plastic material, capable of being shaped and transformed. A gesture that unfolds into a series of timbral textures in which sound goes beyond the note, and where the same gesture becomes a whole reproduced at different scales and in different forms. Les papillons es una composición que surge de la idea del caos y del concepto del efecto mariposa. Este concepto defiende que un determinado sistema caótico, con unas condiciones iniciales dadas, puede sufrir una extraordinaria evolución, en formas y contenidos totalmente diferentes, a causa de la más mínima variación de sus condiciones iniciales, ya sea a corto o a largo plazo. De esta manera, Les Papillons se estructura a través de la combinación de sistemas y partes estables e inestables, donde una pequeña variación causada por la modificación de un parámetro musical (altura, textura, timbre o armonía), desencadena un efecto modulatorio que nos lleva a nuevas formas de desarrollo. Escrita en un movimiento, presenta 4 partes diferenciadas donde se combina el azar, la aleatoriedad controlada y la escritura precisa. Una misma idea que en cada interpretación se presente de manera diferente. Un incio que siempre transcurre por nuevos caminos.
